First Impression: Chica-Y-Chico Matt "Mat Fix" Cushion

Hi! It's time for the second first impression review out of my Althea beauty box. If you haven't seen the first one yet on the W-Lab Black Kill Pore Cleaner, I suggest you check it out, especially if clogged or dirty pores are your problem.

Below is the Althea infographic on this product.

They didn't run out of claims easily, didn't they? Now, on to the actual review of the actual product!

From the packaging alone, you can tell that this is a product meant to be used once in the morning and then left at home because retouching would be unnecessary. It's very sturdy but a bit bulky, so petite makeup bags wouldn't appreciate this cushion as a guest.

I was surprised to see it come with a black sponge, as all of my compact powders and powder foundations have had cream or white sponges so far.

I got this in Shade No. 23, which is meant for "natural skin tone," according to the infographic. Herein is the one downfall of Korean facial base products━there is such a limited range of shades.

The first thing I noticed about this, even upon opening the compact, is that THIS STUFF SMELLS REALLY GOOD. I don't know if the scent is fruity or vanilla-y, it just smells really nice!

Upon use, I realized that the sponge's material is perfect for the cushion formulation. It really just picks up the product from the cushion for it to be patted onto your face. It was rather easy to apply, even for a first-time cushion user like myself, and to my relief it oxidized quickly and blended well enough into my natural skin tone.

As you can see, it effectively brightened up my skin without making me look too white. True to the promise of the cushion compact trend, it did the job of a concealer, foundation, and powder in just one layer of makeup. Since today was an ordinary day at the office, I didn't care to try and build up the coverage, but from the photos above you can see that my blemishes, even the red ones, were neutralized, and it covered up my dark circles well enough. I'm not sure if it's noticeable on photos, but I also see the pore care going on. Of course, I did use the W-Lab Black Kill Pore Cleaner just two nights earlier.

Now, let's move on to the product's claims of mattification and sebum control. I have to admit that I was disappointed on that aspect. If you look into the eight claims contained in black circles in the infographic, it claims the following: brightening, wrinkle care, UV protection, strong persistency, mattifying, coverage, sebum control, and pore care. Moreover, the product's "battle cry" seems to be, "Fight against greasy face!" Thus I expected an above-average mattifying effect from this cushion, which wasn't the case on my very oily skin and Ilocos summer━note that the first statement on the infographic is, "Perfect for summer!"

While the product did have a matte finish on my face upon application, it sort of went downhill from there. I had my air conditioner on in the room, but before I even left the house, I felt the need to top off my face with powder. I lightly dusted some Ben Nye Luxury Powder in "Banana" on my T-zone and decided to leave the rest of my face unpowdered.

You can see how my face progressed throughout the morning:

Here, I have on only The Face Shop's Jeju Aloe (99%) Soothing Gel, which I use as my daytime and nighttime moisturizer.

This is right after applying the Chica-Y-Chico cushion.

The last photo was my final look before I left the house, further complemented with the staple "selfie angle." Other stuff used were: Maybelline Fashion Brow 3D Brow & Nose Palette in "Dark Brown," Maybelline Blush Studio Cheeky Glow in "Creamy Cinnamon," and L.A. Girl Matte Flat Finish Pigment Gloss in "Fleur." I'm not one for overly noticeable makeup, so I skipped the nose contour today and purposely tried to make my blush less obvious.

Back to the cushion: By around 10a.m. or so (I left the house at around 7:55a.m.), I felt my face oiling up really bad. I used my Gatsby Oil Clear Sheet (I don't care if it's supposed to be a men's product, because my oily face really calls for it!) and mopped up quite the amount of sebum from my T-zone despite its claims of "powder out, blotting paper out." Mind you, I work in an air-conditioned office.

Once I blotted, though, the cushion went back to being its sweet self━the coverage stayed throughout the day, and it still felt lightweight, unlike when I use Missha Perfect Cover BB Cream (will do a review on this sometime). So, while this isn't the best oil-controlling facial base makeup there is, it still beats the Missha, which I constantly see hyped as "the best BB cream for oily skin," in my book.

Here are my end-of-the-day photos, after having blotted my face twice (at 10:00a.m. and then at 12:45p.m.) and patting my face with tissue paper when I arrived home (past 5:30p.m.). The photos, however, were taken at past 8:00p.m.):

As you can see, the coverage stayed despite the blotting, so it's really only that sebum control that's off with this product.

Overall, despite its failure to live up to its claims of all-day mattification and eliminating the need to use oil blotting paper, this is an okay product. I still can't skip my powder nor forgo using an oil blotter when I have this on, but I can skip using sunblock, primer, concealer, and BB cream, which does save time, so I do see myself opting for this when I have to get face-forward ready in a short period of time. Perhaps I can even skip my moisturizer next time. I'll have to experiment, and if I see better results without using moisturizer, I will definitely report back.

For my first experience using a compact cushion, I would say that this was okay, especially since I got this at a sale price of Php610.00. For its full price of Php1,920.00, though.. ehh. A bit too pricey in my book, especially since I still ended up having to use powder and blot my face later in the day. This is a perfectly fine product, not too disappointing, but a bit on the expensive and not-quite-worth-it side for me to deem necessary in my makeup arsenal.

That's that. Thanks for reading!

First Impression: W-Lab Black Kill Pore Cleaner

Hi! As promised, I will be doing a per-product first impression review of the contents of my [first] Althea beauty box. It arrived last Monday, April 25, and on that same night, out of excitement, I started using the Black Kill Pore Cleaner from W-Lab!

Below, you can see the infographic on the Althea website regarding the product. You can also click the image and zoom into it for a better look (I'm not sure it's going to show up at its full size on my blog).

Here is my actual photo of the pore cleaner:

This contains 20mL of product has a 12-month shelf life. I only took a photo of the front since all the needed info was already on the website and everything else on the label is in Korean.

The packaging itself is very sleek and likable. As you can see, it's got a matte black body and a soft of black-tinted cap. The cap is very secure and its size makes it very easy to store alongside other cosmetics.

Here you can see the silicone brush boasted of in the first image. True to its description, it was not harsh at all on the skin and felt like I was giving my face a micro-massage of some sort. Despite its softness, I definitely felt its exfoliating function.

Reiterating what the infographic says, this pore cleaner contains 51% seawater as well as charcoal powder to help discharge waste from the skin and control blackheads and sebum production. The texture of the product felt like a foam cleanser. My face was barely damp, but it lathered up very nicely and I believe one to two pumps would be enough to handle the entire nose and surrounding areas.

My skin felt very relaxed as I massaged using this pore cleaner. The cooling effect was very noticeable and I did feel like the silicon brush was giving my pores a deep cleanup.

This is meant to be used twice to thrice a week, thus for now I can only give my first impression. Before I end this review, below is my before-and-after photo. The original photos had very different lighting (I don't know why the lights in our house are so difficult to angle to get the same photo tones even during the same time of day and in the same location!), so I increased the brightness a bit for the first photo:

I'm feeling really ashamed of my nose right now, but whatever.

As you can see, in the top photo ("before"), my pores look quite clogged, not just on my nose but also on the skin on the sides of my nose. It just looks generally dirty.

The "after" photo shows improved skin texture and shrunken pores, again not only on my nose but also on the surrounding areas.

Obviously, the effects aren't ultra dramatic, thankfully because my pore situation isn't quite as severe as those in the product's official "before and after use" photos. However, that is just from one use. I believe that this product will be able to deliver even better results over time, just judging from the effects of a single use!

Were I to gauge this, its results are similar to the Body Treats Charcoal Nose Strips, except instead of having a limited area of your face to treat and having to wait 10-15 minutes, you have all the liberty to target any area of your face with the W-Lab pore cleaner, and you can be done in less than five minutes. You don't have to "sacrifice" those tiny areas of your nose that won't be covered by a pore strip, and you get to clean those hard-to-reach corners of the nose that are so difficult to target using pore strips (I actually used this on my chin and forehead, too!).

So from my first impression, is the W-Lab Black Kill Pore Cleaner worth a try? Definitely━especially at its current sale price of Php720.00 on Althea Korea (the original price is Php1,030.00).

The product is not disappointing at all, but would I repurchase once I run out? For now, I am still undecided. Time will tell.

P.S. Before I forget, here is a picture of my beauty box, as promised in my last post━check out the free samples!

Thanks for reading!

Althea Korea (PH) Haul & Review

Okay, not exactly a haul. Would five items count as a haul? Not for me. But it's an Althea box. That in itself is good enough, right?

Here are the items I got, with links to their Althea product pages:

  • Piolang Raspberry Hair Treatment Vinegar (500mL)

  • W-Lab Black Kill Pore Cleaner
  • Claims: exfoliation, blackhead removal, cooling effects, removal of fine dust, and pore-tightening effect
  • 30% discount lowered price from Php1,030 to Php720
I was able to get all of the above for Php1,955.00 (roughly $42.00), which isn't bad considering these are 100% authentic Korean cosmetics shipped directly from Korea!

Althea offers free shipping for orders above Php1,500.00, so I highly recommend placing an order with friends or family if you're on a tight budget to save as much as you can. Right now, they're also offering a Php150.00-off promo if you're a first-time customer.
This is not a product review post, but rather a review of Althea. I really commend their service. Why?

The first time I placed my order, I messed up on choosing the payment method. I chose an online transfer (through Dragonpay) instead of bank deposit, not knowing that I would have to "register" Dragonpay as a 3rd party account first. I kinda freaked out and the "back" button wasn't an option. When I checked my points balance (the Php150-off promo), the 150 points were gone and I got really down, but I decided to try contacting their customer service about my concern.

Thirty-five minutes after I sent a message, I got the following e-mail from their staff named Eliza:

"Thank you for contacting Althea! Rest assured that your pending order (#########) has been cancelled and your unused credits returned back to your account balance.

We would advise you to re-order since payments can't be resumed from pending state to avoid duplicate orders or payments on the same order ID.
Please let us know should you have further enquiries. We are more than happy to assist :)"

Which was really nice and efficient of them. So, I got my discounts back!

I paid for my new order on April 13 through a bank deposit to Dragonpay through BPI (Bank of the Philippine Islands). The Althea website says to allow 10-15 days of shipping, so obviously I wasn't expecting anything to be as quick as your ordinary online-shopping deliveries.

On April 15, I received an e-mail about a possible delay in shipping due to a Korean holiday, which I didn't mind.

Three days later, on April 18, I got an e-mail saying that my order had been shipped, so I thought that 10-15 days' countdown would start on the 18th. Not counting Sundays, I projected its possible arrival between April 29 to May 5. So, you can imagine how thrilled I was on Monday, April 25, when I was eating lunch at my cousins' diner and she mentioned how a package from Korea had arrived for me that morning━basically 9 days of waiting (again not counting Sundays) from the day I placed my order. Wow!

As promised by Althea, I got a pink beauty box (a picture will be included in the next post). All the items were generously bubble-wrapped and I quickly snapped the above photo.

If there's anyone skeptical about Althea, I tell you: there is no need to be cautious or suspicious because the service is great and the products are all high-quality. Aside from Piolang, W-Lab, Witch's Pouch, Nature Republic, and Chica-Y-Chico, they also offer products from the following brands:

  • The SAEM
  • TonyMoly

  • Vegeeco
  • Wonde Ruci
Of the aforementioned brands I have already tried before (Etude House, Holika Holika, Missha, Skinfood, The Face Shop, The SAEM, TonyMoly, Too Cool for School, & VDL), I highly recommend Holika Holika, The Face Shop, The SAEM, Too Cool for School, and VDL.

As a Filipina, I do believe that investing in Korean skincare products is worth the extra cost and hassle (IF you can afford it━I do not condone splurging daily on cosmetics). While USA or UK cosmetics may work well, I do think Asian products are better formulated for our skin. This is just a suggestion, though, and I'm not saying ALL Korean products are great. I know a couple of brands (not mentioning) that have really cute packaging but when it comes to the product, you'd be better off with an ordinary drugstore product.

I'll be posting a full review of each Althea item soon, so do stay tuned. Thanks for reading!
